2023 Kia Sorento vs 2023 Toyota Highlander
2023 Kia Sorento Overview
If you want a crossover SUV that provides three rows but isn’t as large as the usual midsize SUV, there are some fantastic options to consider. One of those is the 2023 Kia Sorento that is now available to test-drive, purchase and lease at Ken Ganley Kia Alliance. Updates for the new model include expanded standard equipment, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There are five core trim levels to consider—LX, S, EX, SX and SX-Prestige—and most of those are available in an X-Line edition that adds off-road capabilities or a PHEV edition that adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Another popular option in this space is the 2023 Toyota Highlander, which is available in six core trim levels—L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited and Platinum—and in this review, we’re going to compare the 2023 Kia Sorento vs 2023 Toyota Highlander crossovers and see how these models distinguish themselves from one another.

The 2023 Kia Sorento available at Ken Ganley Kia Alliance has an 8.2-inch ground clearance, a 110.8-inch wheelbase and a 189.0-inch length, which is 15.75 feet. The 2023 Toyota Highlander, on the other hand, has an 8.0-inch ground clearance, a 112.2-inch wheelbase and a 194.9-inch length, which is about 16.25 feet, and that puts at the smaller end of the midsize range. LED headlamps, heated side mirrors and aluminum wheels are standard equipment in both cases. Kia offers 17- and 18-inch wheels whereas Toyota offers 18- and 20-inch wheels. You’ll find similar options in both cases, including roof rails, a power liftgate and a hands-free liftgate. Both automakers offer models with appearance packages, such as the rugged X-Line with the Sorento and the chrome-decorated Highlander XSE.

Another notable difference when comparing the 2023 Kia Sorento vs 2023 Toyota Highlander is that the Highlander can seat up to eight in its default configuration whereas the Sorento tops out at seven. In both cases, you can opt for second-row bucket seats that lower capacity by one. Despite the larger size of the Highlander, the difference in passenger volume may surprise you. Headroom is about the same. Front legroom is about the same as well. Second-row legroom is actually greater in the Sorento by a full 3 inches and thus much more comfortable for adults, and the Sorento provides almost 2 additional inches in the third row. The Highlander does provide more dedicated cargo space at 16 cubic feet, but considering all that Kia has managed with the Sorento, it is still quite respectable at about 13 cubic feet.

Kia Sorento Mechanical specs
For the purposes of comparing the 2023 Kia Sorento and the 2023 Toyota Highlander in this review, we’re going to focus exclusively on the more popular traditional gas powertrains. Note that both Kia and Toyota also offer a hybrid powertrain, and Kia offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain too. You have the option of front- and all-wheel drive with both models. That option is there with all models that are front-wheel-drive standard, and in the case of the Kia, some trims include all-wheel drive. Both automakers have opted for an eight-speed automatic transmission. The default engine for the Kia is a 191-hp four-cylinder. The optional engine for the Kia is a 281-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. Toyota only offers one engine, which is a 265-hp turbocharged four-cylinder.

Technology - 2023 Kia Sorento dealer
There are many similarities here in terms of the standard and optional infotainment technologies and the standard and optional driver-assistance technologies. The MSRP for the Sorento is lower, and you’re generally going to spend less to get the same features on the Kia than the Toyota. It’s also notable that Kia offers some features that Toyota does not, such as a blind-spot camera.
